Unlocking our understanding of intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams with genomic tools

چکیده
Intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams (IRES) – waterways in which flow ceases periodically or that dry completely are found worldwide, their frequency extent expected to increase the future response global climate change growing anthropogenic demand for fresh water. Repeated wet–dry cycles generate highly dynamic settings within river networks composed of aquatic terrestrial habitats, act as evolutionary triggers biota. Drying also alters functions processes networks, with consequences ecosystem services. Despite emergence promising conceptual methodological developments, our understanding occurrence diversity organisms these ecosystems is limited primarily due coupled aquatic–terrestrial characteristics. Novel genomic tools based on high-throughput sequencing have potential tackle unanswered questions pivotal importance predict IRES. Here, we outline why needed assess from population metacommunity scale, role bridging ecological–evolutionary dynamics.

Discontinuous ephemeral streams
Many ephemeral streams in western North America flowed over smooth valley floors before transformation from shallow discontinuous channels into deep arroyos. These inherently unstable streams of semiarid regions are sensitive to short-term climatic changes, and t’o human impacts, because hillslopes supply abundant sediment to infrequent large streamflow events. Discontinuous ephemeral streams a...
متن کاملUnlocking hidden genomic sequence.
Despite the success of conventional Sanger sequencing, significant regions of many genomes still present major obstacles to sequencing. Here we propose a novel approach with the potential to alleviate a wide range of sequencing difficulties. The technique involves extracting target DNA sequence from variants generated by introduction of random mutations. The introduction of mutations does not d...
متن کاملScalingthegastransfervelocityandhydraulic geometry in streams and small rivers
Scaling is an integral component of ecology and earth science. To date, the ability to determine the importance of air – water gas exchange across large spatial scales is hampered partly by our ability to scale the gas transfer velocity and stream hydraulics. Here we report on a metadata analysis of 563 direct gas tracer release experiments that examines scaling laws for the gas transfer veloci...
متن کاملa comparison of teachers and supervisors, with respect to teacher efficacy and reflection
supervisors play an undeniable role in training teachers, before starting their professional experience by preparing them, at the initial years of their teaching by checking their work within the proper framework, and later on during their teaching by assessing their progress. but surprisingly, exploring their attributes, professional demands, and qualifications has remained a neglected theme i...
